Established in 1890, Spanaway is located in unincorporated Pierce County, Washington, fifteen miles south of Tacoma on State Road 7, the "Mountain Highway", and adjacent to the east boundaries of McChord Air Force Base and Fort Lewis Army Post.

Local Mythology
Zach-Ad is a Nusqually (sic) spirit "that cries at night in the swamps, dense woods, or other lonely places, but particularly out near Spanaway Lake. (Zach-Ad) is derived from the Squally word 'to cry'...and the voice of this spirit is an omen of death."
